Bob Marley (Robert Nesta Marley February 6, 1945 - May 11, 1981) was a Jamaican reggae songwriter and musician born in Nine Mile, Jamaica, and the leader of a group called the Wailers. The group performed mainly Reggae songs such as 'I Shot the Sheriff' - 'No Woman No Cry' and ' Could you be love?' Marley was a prominent member of the Rastafari movement. His father was a captain in the Royal Marines from Essex in the UK, and was 41 years old when Bob was born. Marley is among the most widely known reggae performers, and his son Ziggy Marley (born 1968) is also a talent in the music field.
Based on my research (consisting mostly of US, CAN, UK album certifications) Bob's records released by island have sold upwards of 70 million to date. This does not include official counts from Africa, Asia, Jamaica, and South America to name a few, where unofficial estimates sight millions of more sales. The total also does not include the many bootlegged and pirated albums from STUDIO ONE to the Lee 'Scratch' Perry era that have been circulating, priamarily in the British underground, since the 1960's. Estimates of Bob's album sales have ranged as high as 300 million and in all likelihood are not under 150-200million. A previous answer said 25,000,000 and rising. This is NOT true. Bob Marley's best seller, the posthumously released 'Legend' has sold 25 million copies by itself.

Bob Marley died as a result of melanoma (a type of skin cancer) which was initially discovered in 1977 after a football (soccer) accident which resulted in the nail of Marley's big toe being torn off. It is believed that the cancer originated in this area (as it was first discovered there upon inspection and treatment of his injury) and eventually metastasized to his liver lungs and brain. Marley received a small skin graft of the big toe which was the result of a great compromise between him and his doctor due to his strict Rastafarian beliefs. He refused to have the toe amputated and was put on a very regimented diet and recommended to pursue periodic check ups (which he did not do) in order to combat the cancer and any further infection. 
By 1980 The cancer was at an irreversible (inoperable) stage and Marley died the following year after receiving radiation and holistic or 'alternative treatment in Germany.
